Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) From 1 November students applying for a visa to do postgraduate study in the UK in a number of scientific and technical subjects will need to apply for an ATAS certificate as part of the visa application process. This is an extra security precaution in line with similar measures already introduced by other countries and it will apply to international students from all over the world, except EEA and Swiss nationals. It costs nothing and it is easy to do. You submit a form by email and you normally get your ATAS certificate within 3 weeks, after which you proceed with your visa application as normal. For a list of ATAS subject areas, the application form and other information click here or contact the UK Visa Application Centre.
